Google will now let customers filter you out.

Google has added an Online estimates filter to local searches for home services. It sits at the very top of the results page, above the ads, above the reviews, above the top-rated list. One click, and every contractor who does not offer some form of online pricing disappears from that customer's view.
What actually changed.
On searches like roof repair near me or hvac contractor miami, Google now shows a small filter chip labeled Online estimates. A homeowner taps it and the results narrow to businesses that give pricing context online: an instant estimate tool, published price ranges, or a quote form that returns a real number.

The trades where it has been spotted so far read like our client list: roofing, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, windows, solar, landscaping. It is rolling out quietly, which means most contractors have not noticed it yet. That is the window.
What did not change, so you can ignore the panic posts.
This is not a new ranking algorithm. If nobody clicks the filter, your rankings work exactly like they did last month. Your reviews, your proximity, and your pages still decide where you show up. Anyone telling you your SEO is suddenly worthless is selling something.
Here is the honest version: the filter only bites when a searcher uses it. But Google put it in the most valuable pixels it owns, at the top of the page, and Google does not spend that space on features it plans to abandon. And when it is on, it reshuffles the deck: the company with online pricing can leapfrog a higher-reviewed competitor into the first slot. Expect more searches to start with it on, not fewer.
Real search for roofing near me, one tap of the filter. Action Roofing, which advertises a written report and fixed price, jumps from #2 to #1. The filter does not just hide companies, it reorders who the customer sees first.
Why Google is doing this.
Because customers hate calling five companies to hear one number. People shop for services the way they shop for everything now: they want a ballpark before they talk to anyone. Google follows behavior, and the behavior says pricing transparency wins. High-ticket trades, where homeowners hesitate to call without a rough figure, are exactly where this lands first.
Where we land on this.
We did not have to change anything for this update. Every website we build already gives customers a real price range online. Our first client runs an instant estimate on their site today, and $71,225 of booked work came through that website in ten months.
If your site cannot give a customer a number, this filter is a good reason to talk to us.

Google has not published formal documentation for the filter; details above reflect what is observable in live search results as of publication, and features like this can change or vary by market.
Fair questions.
Is this a ranking algorithm change?
No. Your normal rankings still work the way they did last month. This is a filter a searcher can click. The catch is where it sits: at the very top of the results page, above ads and reviews, so as more homeowners notice it, more searches effectively start with it on.
Which trades does this affect?
It has been spotted across home services: roofing, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, windows, solar, landscaping and more, on searches like roof repair near me. If your customers compare a few companies on Google before calling, assume it applies to you.
